ABOUT THE PROJECT
In an instant, a tenth of the world’s population quietly vanishes. The media emerges with a theory that those disappeared were artists and dub the event ‘The Artist Rapture’. Two of those left behind are Evelyn, a successful and reclusive painter, and her granddaughter Lucy, a free-spirited performance art student. In the aftermath, they struggle to make sense of what this means for their careers and why they weren’t taken. Evelyn is visited by the specter of a former lover, Thomas Kinkade. This dark comedy explores how artists approach their work and our desire to define and create art.
To complement the themes and performance, Savage Umbrella created a gallery installation in the lobby featuring the work of local artists. Artists were asked to select or create pieces that speak to their core artistic identity.
PRESS
"This was my first time attending a Savage Umbrella production, and I liked what I saw. A thought-provoking new play, solid cast, and all around well-done production. They also display art by local artists in the lobby, which adds to the evening of contemplating art. In the end, I couldn't help but think of my favorite musician Glen Hansard's Oscar acceptance speech - 'Make art, make art!'" - Jill Schafer, Cherry and Spoon
